# Custom Parts Racks & Shelving

https://kdisplay.com/products/carts-racks-bins/racks-shelving

K-Display, a Chicago sheet metal fabricator, builds racks and shelves for parts, totes, and dunnage from customer drawings: frames, formed shelves, part supports and stops, and bay connection plates in carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. They ship powder coated with hardware installed, welded or knocked down.

## Overview
We build custom parts racks and shelving that store and stage parts, totes, and dunnage in floor bays, from one bay to a run. Frames and shelves are cut, formed, and welded in carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, powder coated, and fitted with self-clinching nuts and studs where shelves and bays bolt together. A knocked-down rack ships with its bolts and connection hardware kitted. A rack that rolls is built as an industrial carts & dollies frame, and racks that hold 19-inch equipment are built as server cabinets & rack frames.

## Process
- Cut the parts and form the flanges: We laser cut the uprights, shelves, and plates and press-brake form the shelf flanges, supports, and stops.
- Weld the frame: We fit and weld the uprights, crossmembers, and rear bracing to the footplates, choosing MIG or TIG for each joint.
- Press in hardware, coat, and kit: We press self-clinching nuts and studs in before coating and powder coat the rack. We then kit the bolts and hardware for a knocked-down rack.

## Typical parts
- Rack and shelving frames: Uprights, crossmembers, and rear bracing welded square on footplates.
- Shelves: Formed shelves cut to the part or tote they carry.
- Part supports, stops, and dividers: Supports, stops, and dividers that seat each part in its orientation.
- Bay connection plates: Plates that bolt one bay to the next and to the floor.

## Design considerations
- Loading path: A part enters by hand, on a cart, or from a lift truck, and that fixes which faces of the bay stay open. Bracing in the path stops the part short, so we weld it behind the shelves.
- Shelf load and span: A wide flat shelf sags across its span where a flanged one holds. We form a flange along the front and rear edges, which stiffens the span and leaves a folded edge where a hand reaches.
- Bay connections: Two bays bolt together only if both plates carry the same hole pattern. We cut the plates for a run together, so no bay drifts from the pattern.
- Knock-down joints: A rack that ships flat is bolted where it stands, and a bolt behind a shelf cannot be tightened once the shelf is in. We locate the bolts on faces a wrench reaches.
