# Custom Workstations & Work Benches

K-Display, a Chicago sheet metal fabricator, builds packing and picking stations and work benches from customer drawings: welded frames, formed metal tops and shelves, and plates for monitors and scanners in carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum. They ship powder coated with feet installed.

## Overview
We build custom workstations for packing and picking cells, fixed in place: a welded frame, a metal top, shelves, and plates that carry a monitor or a scanner. A work bench takes the same frame and top with shelves and tool supports. Frame and top are carbon steel, stainless steel, or aluminum, powder coated, with self-clinching nuts, leveling feet, and hardware installed. A knocked-down station ships with its top and bolts kitted. A floor frame that carries a machine or a fixture is built as welded frames & weldments, and a station that rolls between cells as an industrial carts & dollies fr…

## Process
- Cut the frame, top, and plates: We laser cut the frame members, top, shelves, and plates with their openings and slots, and press-brake form the top edges and trays.
- Weld the frame: We MIG or TIG weld the legs, rails, and crossmembers that carry the top and the plates.
- Install hardware, coat, and assemble: We press self-clinching nuts into the frame and plates, then powder coat the parts. We bolt the top and plates to the frame and fit the leveling feet, trays, and tool supports.

## Typical parts
- Workstation frames: Welded legs, rails, and crossmembers at the working height, on leveling feet or bolted to the floor.
- Tops and shelves: Formed metal tops and shelves with edge returns, cable openings, and cutouts for the equipment.
- Equipment mounting plates: Plates and brackets on the top or the frame, slotted or drilled to the footprint of a monitor or a scanner.
- Cable trays and tool supports: Formed trays behind or under the top and supports for tools and purchased accessories.

## Design considerations
- Working height: A seated station and a standing station put the top at different heights, so a top set for one suits the other poorly. We weld the legs to the working height and add leveling feet, so the top can be leveled on an uneven floor.
- Knee space: A seated operator needs open depth under the top, and a front rail across it meets the knees. We set the rails and crossmembers at the sides and back and leave the front open.
- Equipment load path: A monitor arm or a scanner mount loads the top at its mounting plate, and over an open span the top flexes under it. We locate the plate over a frame member.
